A walk in the park

This morning i went up on the first bus to go and see Donny the boot doctor for an alignment check. The result was that i have a slight tendancy to be on the inside edge of my left ski when skiing straight. He stuck on some makeshift angled shims to centre my alignment again and sent me off skiing for the day.

Today is race practice. Wendy took the majority of the group up onto the mountain whilst Dwight and James set up a slalom course with stubby gates. We spent the morning sessioning a couple of different layouts to improve our edge to edge response, keep our focus to the terrain coming up and not under our feet, and to think more about terrain analysis and line choice into corners. Just before lunch we had a couple of runs down the skier cross course which was in a much better condition than yesterday.

After lunch we did a bit more of the same, having a few races each with the newly installed drop gate (we were literally the first ones to test it out) before heading up the mountain and hitting a few groomers before the end of the day.

Full moon snowshoe social

Most of the group had signed up for tonights social activity, which was a full moon snowshoe around the north side of fernie, down the river and back via the mountain bike trail. The sky was clear and the full moon was in full view. Once we managed to strap into the snowshoes and clear the edge of town, the whole area dropped into blackness except the mountains to the west of Fernie which were illuminated by the moonlight making the whole place look pretty spectacular. We romped along the river path and across the tracks, obviously pausing for a classic pose...

Fiona braving the tracks

We walked back to town via one of the cross country mountain bike trails, although i think some either didn't want to, or didn't have the energy to go a bit further into the mountainside to explore a few of the other biking trails in the area, much to my disappointment. It was a good walk anyway and gave us the chance to see a different part of Fernie. The social aspect was a little harder though due to the hard packed snow causing the snowshoes to make an absolute racket!
